Minimizing Feelings
Nurse cannot empathize and or understand with the patient, causes patient to be small.
Giving Premature Advice
Nurse knows best and patient cannot make decisions for themselves. giving advice before the nurse knows the whole situation
Falsely Reassuring
Underrates the persons feelings and belittles the persons concerns, may cause patient to stop sharing feelings expecting to be made fun of
Making Value Judgements
prevents problem solving, can make patient feel guilty or angry, not supported
Asking Why Questions
Implies constant criticism, making the patient have a need to justify all of their behaviours, leaves patient feeling defensive
Asking Excessive Questions
Patient does not know what question to answer, too many things going on at the same time
Giving Approval, Agreeing
implies patient is doing the right thing, may lead patient to focus on pleasing the nurse
Disapproving, Disagreeing
Can make a person defensive
Changing the subject
May invalidate the patients feelings and needs, can leave patient feeling isolated
