Non-Specific Defences Flashcards
Epithelial cells form a
physical barrier
Epithelial cells can be found in
the skin and inner linings of the digestive and respiratory systems
Chemical secretions are produced against
invading pathogens
Examples of chemical secretions include
tears, mucus, saliva and stomach acid.
In an inflammatory response, mast cells release
histamine
Histamine causes
vasodilation and increased capillary permeability
Increased blood flow in an inflammatory response leads to
a build up of phagocytes and clotting elements at the site of infection
Phagocytes recognise pathogens and destroy them by
phagocytosis
Phagocytosis involves the
engulfing of pathogens
During phagocytosis, pathogens are destroyed by
digestive enzymes found in lysosomes.
Phagocytes release cytokines which attract
more phagocytes to the site of infection
Cytokines are protein molecules that cause
specific white blood cells to accumulate at the site of infection
