Immunisation Flashcards
Vaccination programmes are used to
develop immunity from infectious pathogens
Antigens are usually mixed with
an adjuvant
An adjuvant helps to
make the vaccine more effective by enhancing the immune response
Herd immunity is established when
a large percentage of the population is immunised
The herd immunity threshold depends on
the type of disease, effectiveness of vaccine and density of population.
Mass vaccination programmes are designed to
establish herd immunity to a disease
Widespread vaccination is not always possible due to
poverty in the developing world or when the vaccines are rejected by a percentage of the developed world.
Antigenic variation occurs when
pathogens change their antigens
If pathogens change their antigens, memory cells
are NOT effective against them
A well known example of a virus than shows antigenic variation is
Influenza (flu virus)
