non-renewable resources Flashcards
fossil fuel
a hydrocarbon-containing material formed naturally in the earth’s crust from the remains of dead plants and animals
how long does it take fossil fuels to form?
millions of years
3 ways to use heat from fossil fuels
direct use
power engines
generate electricity
disadvantages fossil fuels
-finite
-produced carbon dioxide when burned
-can produce toxic gases
advantages fossil fuels
cheap
versatile
most of our current infrastructure is based on them
what gas is released by burning coal and oil & its effect?
sulfur dioxide, leads to acid rain
how can acid rain be reduced?
by taking the sulfur out before the fuel is burned or cleaning up the emission
environmental impacts fossil fuels
-oil spillages which affect mammals and birds that live in and around the sea
-views spoilt by huge power plants
-coal mining destroys the landscape
how is nuclear energy obtained
obtained via nuclear reactions, such as nuclear fission reactions in nuclear power stations
what is nuclear energy used for?
to generate electricity, which can then be transmitted to homes and factories across the country
nuclear advantages
-don’t produce pollutants
-can be used in any conditions
-unlikely to run out for a long time
nuclear disadvantages
-technically a finite resource
-produce radioactive waste
-expensive
environmental issues nuclear
-nuclear waste is dangerous and difficult to dispose of
-risk of major catastrophe (nuclear meltdown)
