bio-fuels Flashcards
difference between biofuels and fossil fuels
-biofuels mostly made from recently living organisms, such as plants and algae
-fossil fuels made from organisms which died millions of years ago
how is energy released
plants and algae can trap the suns energy as part of photosynthesis, and this energy is released when we combust the fuel
biofuels advantages
-easy to transport
-can be used in cars
-supposedly carbon neutral
-fairly reliable
biofuels disadvantages
-high cost to refine
-can’t respond to immediate energy demands
-require a lot of energy to harvest, process and transport
-require a large area of land to grow
-release pollutants
carbon neutral
absorb the same amount of carbon dioxide while growing, as they release when they’re burned
in reality why aren’t biofuels carbon neutral?
-trees may be cut down so don’t absorb carbon dioxide
-trees may be cut down and will release carbon dioxide if burnt
-energy required to harvest, process and transport
-which releases more carbon dioxide
