conduction Flashcards
1
Q
what is conduction?
A
the process where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
2
Q
how does conduction transfer energy?
A
- as one end of an object is heated, energy is transferred to the kinetic stores of the particles in that end
- the particles in the hot part of the object vibrate more as they have more kinetic energy and collide with each other causing energy to be transferred between particles’ kinetic energy stores
- process continues throughout the object until the energy is transferred to the other side of the object
3
Q
why does conduction occur mostly in a solid?
A
- particles are held closely so lots of collisions that pass on energy
- in liquids and gases, particles are further apart so don’t collide as frequently
