Non-renewable energy (Advantages and disadvantages) Flashcards
Non-renewable fuels
Finite resources. Once they have been used they can never be used again.
Features of Coal
1) Has to be mined from deep under the ground
2) Has to be burnt to produce energy
3) Formed from fossilised plants
Advantages of coal
1) Last for another 250 years
2) Easy to convert into energy by simply burning it
3) Cheap to mine
Disadvantages of coal
1) Bulky to transport
2) Give off greenhouse gases eg. Carbon dioxide
Features of oil
1) Pipes are put down through the ground and the liquid is pumped to surface.
2) It is burnt to provide energy
3) Formed from fossilised animals.
Advantages of oil
1) Easy to convert into energy by simply burning it
2) Cheap to mine
3) Last for another 50 years
Disadvantages of oil
1) Very expensive to buy
2) Give off greenhouse gases e.g. Carbon dioxide
Features of methane gases
1) Pipes are put down through the ground and the gas is pumped to the surface
2) Burnt to provide energy
Advantages of methane gases
1) GIve off fewer greenhouse gases
2) Last for 70 years
3) Easy to convert into energy
Disadvantages of methane gases
Will not last forever
Features of nuclear
1) Produced from uranium which is obtained by mining.
Energy is produced when the atoms are split or joined together in nuclear reactors.
Advantages of nuclear
1) Does not give off greenhouse gases
2) Raw materials will last a long time
3) A small amount of uranium gives off a lot of energy
Disadvantages of nuclear
1) Nuclear reactors are expensive to build and run
2) Nuclear waste is radioactive and highly toxic
3) Has to be stored for 100s/1000s of years
4) Expensive
