Non-random Mating, Population Structure, Migration And Wright’s F Statisitic Flashcards
1
Q
Define random mating
A
- when mating takes place between individuals in the same proportions as their population genotype frequencies
2
Q
What is positive and negative assortative mating
A
Positive assortative mating -> occurs when individuals with similar genotypes of phenotypes mate preferentially (common in natural populations)
Negative assortative mating -> occurs when individuals with dissimilar genotypes or phenotypes mate preferentially (disassortative mating)
3
Q
Describe migration
A
- aka gene flow
- occurs when individuals move between populations
- if populations have different gene frequencies, migration may alter the gene frequencies in the recipient population or introduce new alleles
- tends to make populations genetically similar
4
Q
The Wahlund effect
A
- occurs when two populations are mixed
- also when two or more sub populations are present with little gene flow between them
- the observation that there are fewer heterozygous in the resulting mixed population is known as the wahlund effect
