Q

What is positive and negative assortative mating

A

Positive assortative mating -> occurs when individuals with similar genotypes of phenotypes mate preferentially (common in natural populations)

Negative assortative mating -> occurs when individuals with dissimilar genotypes or phenotypes mate preferentially (disassortative mating)

Q

Describe migration

A
  • aka gene flow
  • occurs when individuals move between populations
  • if populations have different gene frequencies, migration may alter the gene frequencies in the recipient population or introduce new alleles
  • tends to make populations genetically similar

Q

The Wahlund effect

A
  • occurs when two populations are mixed
  • also when two or more sub populations are present with little gene flow between them
  • the observation that there are fewer heterozygous in the resulting mixed population is known as the wahlund effect
