Linkage Disequilibrium Flashcards
1
Q
Haplotype definition
A
The combination of genes on one chromosome
- gametes are haploid
2
Q
Why is recombination important?
A
- Maternal and paternal chromosomes carry different alleles
- Both independent assortment and crossing over will produce new allele combinations
- If two or more loci interact natural selection may act on combinations of alleles
- Recombination can act to create and to break up these combinations
- It is an important source of new alleluic combinations
3
Q
Linkage equilibrium is…
A
- the random association of alleles at different loci
4
Q
Linkage disequilibrium is…
A
The no random association of alleles at different loci
5
Q
What destroys linkage disequilibrium?
A
Linkage disequilibrium is lost by recombination
ie. crossing over during meiosis
6
Q
Epistasis definition
A
The expression of one hereditary character to the exclusion of another when the two are controlled by alleles of different genes; also more widely, any interaction of non allergic genes
