Civil Society
A network of social arrangements through which groups in society represent themselves.
Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO)
Organizations come together to help people, but remain independant from the government at all times.
Charitable NGOs
Directed at meeting the needs of the vulnerable and disadvantaged (providing food, shelter, help to people in terms of disasters, etc.).
Service NGOs
Provide people with some kind of service, for example, education, family planning. Those receiving help need to actively participate.
Participatory NGOs
Provide people with the tools, materials, land necessary for them to go on to help themselves and the community.
Empowering NGOs
Aim to empower people by helping them understand their social, political, and economic rights as individuals and as communities.
Civil societies vs NGOs (3)
1) One way in which we can distinguish between NGOs and other civil society organisations is by scale.
2) While CSOs may be influenced by regional and international trends they generally operate at a local or community level.
3) NGOs, on the other hand, operate at a number of different scales.
Importance of NGOs
1) They address global challenges and promoting cooperation
2) Promote wellbeing
3) Promote equality
4) Driving change and addressing complex issues
