Non- ferrous metals Flashcards
How are Wrought metals different to cast metals?
Wrought metals have a low alloy content where as cast has a high alloy component
Wrought metals- Mallable?
yes
Cast metals- Mallable?
No, brittle
Wrought Metals- Manufacturing
Heat and worked using tools
Cast Metals- Manufacture
Melted and poured into a die
What is annealing and what does it do?
Heating up and it relieves internal stresses
What is Hardenability?
The rate at which hardening decreases with distance
How is initial Hardenability tested?
Using a Jominy end-quenched sample
What does hardenability depend on?
Alloys, Carbon content and geometry
What properties does precipitation hardening encourage?
Strength but decreased ductility
Describe precipitation hardening process
Leaves to Cu (solute atoms) forming inside of AL crystal structure
Processes- Forging
Die is pushed into metal forming the right shape
Processes- Rolling
Rolling metal to thin and also to change grain boundaries
Processes- Extrusion
Metal is pulled through die to make it a certain shape
Processes- drawing
metal is pushed though a die to thin it out
