Ferrous Metals Flashcards
Why steel ? (3)
Low cost, high density and high yield strength
What is good about stainless steel?
Corrosion resistance
Does steel need a lot of energy to produce
no
Is steel easy to recycle?
yes
Properties of alpha iron (ferrite)- structure
bcc
Properties of alpha iron (ferrite)- hardness
soft
Properties of alpha iron (ferrite)- amount of carbon
less than 2%
Properties of alpha iron (ferrite)- Ferromagnetic?
yes up to 1043K
Properties of Fe3C (cementite)- structure
orthorhombic
Properties of Fe3C (cementite)- strength
hard
Properties of Fe3C (cementite)- ferromagnetic
yes but lower temp then alpha
Properties of gamma iron (austenite)- structure
fcc
Properties of gamma-iron (austenite)- when present
high temp phase
What is eutectoid
At this point the iron will turn into 100 % pearlite
what is pearlite
Layers of alpha and cementite
Hypoeutectoid- forms?
low carbon matrix is alpha
Hypereutectoid- forms?
more carbon- matrix is cermentite
Why is pearlite good properties wise?
Because it is strong and malleable
What happens if we cool the iron really fast
Martensite or Bainite is formed
Structure of martensite
fcc but with carbon stretching the structure so no longer cubic
Why do we not just try and get properties we want from fast cool in one go?
difficult to control, so quench and then temper to change properties
What is good about martensite?
really big tensile strength
How does increasing tempering temperature effect material
reduces amount of martensite so more malleable
What happens with higher carbon steels in the phase diagram
Graphite is also formed
Grey iron- what?
Graphite flakes in ferrite matrix
Grey iron- properties(3)
hard, brittle, wear resistant
Ductile iron- what?
Graphite nodules in ferrite matrix
Ductile iron properties(2)
strong, ductile
White iron- what?
Cementite and Pearlite
White iron- properties(3)
Brittle, compressive strength, wear resistance
Malleable iron- what?
Graphite rosettes in a ferrite matrix
Malleable iron- properties(1)
malleable
Compacted graphite iron- what?
Graphite particles in a ferrite matrix
Compacted graphite iron- properties
Grey iron but more strength and ductility

How much CR does stainless steel have
More then 12%
