Non ferrous metal Flashcards
What are non-ferrous metals?
Materials which are alloys or metals that do not contain any appreciable amounts of iron
All pure metals are non-ferrous elements, except for iron.
What are the key properties of aluminium?
- Malleable
- Corrosion resistant
- Conductor of heat and electricity
In its purest form, aluminium has low tensile strength compared to steel, but this can be improved when alloyed.
Why is aluminium widely used in the aerospace and automotive sectors?
Due to its low weight and high corrosion resistance.
What are the main applications of copper?
- Household pipes
- Electrical wiring
- Cooking utensils
Copper is malleable, corrosion resistant, and a conductor of heat and electricity.
How can the tensile strength of copper be improved?
By alloying with tin to form bronze or with zinc to form brass.
What are the properties of zinc?
- Soft
- Brittle
- High corrosion resistance
- Ductile
- Conductive
Zinc is often used as a protective coating for mild steel components (galvanising).
What is brass composed of?
Copper and zinc.
What are the properties of brass?
- Higher malleability than zinc or copper
- Low melting point (900 degrees centigrade)
- Flows when melted
- Corrosion resistant
Brass is a metal alloy.
What is bronze made up of?
Copper and tin.
What are the properties of bronze?
- Hard and brittle
- Melts at 950 degrees centigrade
- Resists corrosion and metal fatigue more than steel
- Better conductor of heat and electricity than most steels.
What is phosphor bronze?
An 8% tin bronze that contains about 0.3% phosphorus, known for high tensile strength, hardness, and resistance to wear and corrosion by seawater.
What is gunmetal?
A tin/bronze/zinc alloy with excellent resistance to corrosion and moderately high strength.
How does the nickel content affect copper-nickel alloy?
Increases tensile strength, ductility, and hardness.
What are nickel silvers and silver bronzes?
Alloys containing elements of copper, nickel, and zinc, but are neither true silvers nor bronzes.
What are the properties of silicon ‘bronze’ alloys?
Good corrosion resistance, particularly in sulphurous atmospheres.
What is the appearance of copper-aluminium alloys?
Bright golden-yellow in color.
What does delta bronze contain?
About 1% aluminium, iron, nickel, and manganese.
What are the properties of aluminium?
- Ductile
- Malleable
- Light
Alloy composition: Aluminium 95%, Copper 4%, Manganese 1%.
What is the color and properties of copper?
Reddish brown, ductile, malleable, and conductive.
What is the color and properties of brass?
Yellow, hard, and conductive.
What is the color and properties of silver?
Whitish grey, ductile, malleable, and corrosion resistant.
What is the color and properties of lead?
Bluish grey, ductile.
