Non Engineering Controls Flashcards
Maximum Use Concentration (MUC)
MUC = APF x Exposure Limit
Filter Series:
N - Restricted to use in work places free of oil aerosols because the N-series certification tests
involve challenging with non-degradation sodium chloride aerosols
R - Intended for removal of any particulate including oil based liquid particulates
P - Also intended for any particulate including oil based liquids, however the P series filter will
not have any time – use limitations.
Traditional approach to respirator selection
- TLV in ppm = cartridge,
- TLV in mg/m3 filter,
- TLV in mg/m3 & ppm = filter/cartridge combo
Saturated Vapor Concentration (SVC) vs. Total Airborne Concentration (TAC)
aids in predicting the phase of the agent.
SVC > TAC Vapor SVC < TAC Particle
CPC testing:
ASTM Method F739
(1) Breakthrough time – chemical becomes evident
(2) Steady state – constant concentration gradient after breakthrough
Degradation
changes in barrier physical properties
Penetration
flow of chemicals thru cuts, zippers, seams and imperfections
Permeation Rate
max flux thru barrier
Ficks Law applies
with temp, with thickness
