Non-Destructive Testing - Ultrasonic Testing Flashcards
What is the definition of Ultrasonic (US) testing?
High frequency sound waves are transmitted into a material to detect imperfections or to locate changes in material properties
The most commonly used Ultrasonic testing technique is the Pulse Echo Method. What is the process for carrying out this testing method?
- sound is introduced into a test object
- reflections from internal imperfections or changes in geometry are returned to the receiver
- The time intervals between transmissions and receptions of pulses show the internal structure of the materiel
What is special about longitudinal waves?
Only type of waves which can travel through liquid
How are shear waves generated?
By passing the ultrasound beam through the material at an angle
What does an angle beam transducer do?
Introduces a refractive shear wave into the test material
How does an angle beam transducer improve flaw detection?
It allows sound wave to enter material from the side so improves flaw detection around welds
What type of components can an angle beam transducer analyse?
Flat sheets
Plates
Pipes and tubing
