Non coding RNAs Flashcards
What to ncRNAs do?
interact w/ other molecules, no not code for proteins
What do ncRNAs bind to?
DNA and other ncRNAs
What do ncRNA affect (DNA)?
DNA replication, transcription, and translation
Who do ncRNA require to bind?
complementary base pairing
What are the 6 functions of a ncRNA?
scaffold, guide, affect ability of protein, ribozyme, blocker, and decoy
what is a scaffold?
when there are multiple binding sites for components/proteins
what is a guide?
when the rcRNA leads the ribozyme to a specific location in the cell
how does an ncRNA affect a protein’s ability?
when bound it can affect the ability to act as a catalyst, bind to other molecules and stability
What is a ribozyme?
An RNA w/ catalytic function
What is a blocker?
an ncRNA that prevents or blocks a cellular response from happening
what is a decoy?
when an ncRNA recognized another ncRNA and prevent it from working as normal (acts as the molecule it usually binds to)
what is HOTAIR?
an ncRNA that alters chromatin structure stopping gene transcription
What does HOTAIR act as?
a scaffold that binds 2 proteins that modify histone proteins, it also guides the protein complexes to the target gene
what are the 2 types of interference?
miRNA and siRNA
what are miRNA
ncRNA that are endogenous, regulate gene expression
