Non-Biological treatments for Phobias Flashcards
What’s did Watson and raynor show about phobias?
That they can be learned, meaning you should be able to unlearn them.
What is Systematic Desensitisation?
Gradually getting the individual to face their fears.
What is the aim of systematic desensitisation?
To get the patient to associate the fear response with a new calming stimulus
How many stages are there to systematic desensitisation?
3
What is stage 1 of systematic desensitisation?
Training the individual on relaxation techniques.
What is stage 2 of systematic desensitisation?
•Ask the patient to imagine situations to do with there phobia.
•Then get them to rank the situations in a hierarchy of which situations give them the most to least anxiety levels
What is stage 3 of systematic desensitisation?
•To slowly face there stages of the hierarchy, starting from least to most anxious.
When can the participant move to the next stage?
•When complete relaxation is achieved
What is a study to support systematic desensitisation?
Mcgrath (1990)
What did mcgrath aim to do?
•Treat a 9 yr old girl called lucy with a. specific noise phobia with systematic desensitisation.
What was the end result for mcgraths systematic desensitisation?
•Lucy started at a rating scale of 7/10 for balloons which after the last session went to a 3/10
•9/10 for party poppers ,went down to 3/10.
What does CBT stand for?
Cognitive behavioural theory
What does CBT focus on?
