Background: The medical model Flashcards
What is biochemical explanations?
It is the result of abnormal neurotransmitter levels or action.
What is the reason for M.I through the biochemical explanation?
There is an imbalance in chemicals
What is the Monoamine hypothesis?
1) Stressful life event
2) Reduction in serotonin levels
3) Poor regulation of dopamine and noradrenaline
What is dopamine responsible for?
Dopamine is responsible for mood levels.
What does noradrenaline do?
It is responsible for activity levels.
What’s is the dopamine hypothesis?
An increased level of dopamine in the lower brain , results in auditory hallucinations due to lower brain responsible for speech.
Decreased dopamine in pre frontal cortex causes irrational thinking(impaired cognitions), due to prefrontal cortex is responsible for decision making.
What is disorder is the monamine hypothesis linked to?
Depression
What disorder is the dopamine hypothesis linked to?
Schizophrenia.
What is the genetic explanation for mental illness?
•Mz twins(one egg)
•Concordance rates for identical twins is 58% COMPARED to 12% for non-identical
•Not 100% meaning other factors influence transmission of Sz(nurture)
What does Mz twins mean?
•One egg
•Identical genes
•Closest you can get to shared genes
What study supports Brain abnormally and Depression?
•Coffey (1993)
What did Coffey discover?
• The frontal lobe is significantly smaller in volume in depressed patients compared to non-depressed patients.
What is the frontal lobe responsible for?
Thinking
what did coffey use to identify his finding?
MRI Scanner
What study supports the Brain abnormality Schizophrenia?
Pardon (2001)
