Q

give a counter argument for Irene elkin’s supporting study of CBT

A

the study demonstrates how CBT was not a particularly useful therapy for the severely depressed. Anti depressants were more affective, CBT was not THAT effective in preventing relapse after 18 months - 36% of recovered CBT clients relapsed, higher rate than interpersonal therapy group

Q

give 2 weaknesses of CBT

A
  • effectiveness of CBT may be mostly due to client therapist relationship: Trudy Meehan suggested CBT
  • CBT has a high drop out rate (costly for NHS) as its a challenging therapy esp for severe depression - requires commitment and demanding homework tasks: some find it hard to adapt.

Q

application of CBT for depression

A

unlike biological treatments, CBT clients learn skills they apply for themselves. This does not even require therapist and homework encourages independence. It also respects clients autonomy and dignity giving them control over their lives = therefore, client becomes their own therapist making relapse much less likely to occur.
