Non-biological treatment for depression (CBT) Flashcards
how does the therapist measure the patients depression?
questionnaires and interviews
what is the main function of CBT
identify clients negative thoughts and re-evaluate them to avoid relapse
what is the role of education within CBT?
therapist acts as a valuable source of information + provides other informative resources
therapist suggests and explains techniques to help client and together will decide what is most helpful and how it should be carried out.
what is the role of homework in CBT?
client needs to carry out plan in real life situations so homework gives them a chance to test the (un)reality of their negative beliefs.
what questionnaire might a patient carry out in their CBT session?
Beck depression inventory (BDI)
what are ANTs?
automatic negative thoughts
name 2 strengths of CBT
- effective treatment for depression e.g. Irene Elkin et al 239 pp’s drugs vs therapy
- application: can help prevent relapse into depression shea et al 18 months
explain how irene elkin et al is a supporting study of CBT
she randomly allocated 239 pp’s w depression to 4 treatment groups. CBT was found to be just as effective in reducing symptoms as antidepressants or interpersonal therapy. ALL were more effective than placebo pill.
what study supports the effective of CBT, and how it’s effects continued after 18 months?
Shea et al 1992
give a counter argument for Irene elkin’s supporting study of CBT
the study demonstrates how CBT was not a particularly useful therapy for the severely depressed. Anti depressants were more affective, CBT was not THAT effective in preventing relapse after 18 months - 36% of recovered CBT clients relapsed, higher rate than interpersonal therapy group
give 2 weaknesses of CBT
- effectiveness of CBT may be mostly due to client therapist relationship: Trudy Meehan suggested CBT
- CBT has a high drop out rate (costly for NHS) as its a challenging therapy esp for severe depression - requires commitment and demanding homework tasks: some find it hard to adapt.
what did Trudy Meehan conclude as a weakness of CBT
case study of depression females - collaborative relationship established b4 using specific techniques encouraged more open communication
application of CBT for depression
unlike biological treatments, CBT clients learn skills they apply for themselves. This does not even require therapist and homework encourages independence. It also respects clients autonomy and dignity giving them control over their lives = therefore, client becomes their own therapist making relapse much less likely to occur.
