Monophyletic clade
A valid clade that consists of an ancestor species and all of its descendants
Paraphyletic clade
A clade that includes a common ancestor and some but not all of its descendants
Polyphyletic clade
A clade with many distantly related species but it does not contain the common ancestor to all of those species
Autotroph
Organism that produces complex organic compounds from simple substances present in its surroundings
Heterotroph
Organism that cannot produce its own food, relying instead on the intake of nutrition from other sources of organic carbon
Mixotroph
Organism that can use a mix of different sources of energy and carbon
