Nodes/structure/circulation Flashcards
(/): principal secondary lymphoid organs
of body
Lymph nodes
Superficial Lymph Node Chains
* Used in Clinical practice as they often become ()/enlarged
due to a variety of infections, (), & other pathologies
* () – neck and jawline
* () - armpit
* () – groin area
inflamed
cancers
Cervical
Axillary
Inguinal
Two main functions of lymph nodes
1. () the lymph: act as lymph “filters”
* () remove and destroy microorganisms
and debris that enter lymph
* Prevent unwanted substances from being delivered to blood
2.(/) activation: offer a place for
lymphocytes to become activated and mount
an attack against antigens
Cleansing
Macrophages
Immune system
Vary in shape and size, but most are bean shaped
* Small, less than 2.5 cm (~1 inch)
Surrounded by external fibrous ()
Two histologically distinct regions of node:
capsule
1. Cortex
2. Medulla
Circulation:
Lymph enters node via () lymphatic vessels
Travels throughout () and ()
Finally exits at hilum via () lymphatic
vessels
Presence of fewer efferent vessels causes flow to somewhat ()
allows lymphocytes and macrophages time to
function
afferent
cortex
medulla
efferent
stagnate
CLINICAL – SIGNIFICANCE
Breast cancer often metastasizes (spreads)
to most local lymph node chain
() lymph nodes
() with local lymphadenectomy
often leads to unilateral edema in arm
Removed lymph nodes can lead to lymphatic obstruction and decreased return to heart
Axillary
Mastectomy
