No2 Flashcards
Parenchyma?
Thin walled cells making up bulk of plant
Collenchyma?
Irregular secondary thickening of cell wall, provide support in new shoots
Sclerenchyma?
Support cells with substantial secondary thickening with lignin, dead at maturity ie xylem
Animal cell vs plant cell
Animal is smaller, no cell wall, many vacuoles
Plant is larger, cell wall, one vacuoles, chloroplast
Pericycle?
Thin layer of undifferentiated cells, meristem tissue, source of new lateral roots.
Cotyledon?
Seed leaf, allows photosynthesis to start
Stolon?
Stem that grows horizontally above surface
Rhizome?
Underground stem that produce roots on the lower surface and extend leaves above ground.
Bulb?
Layers of fleshy scales that overlap. Underground stem, food storage.
Root nodules?
Contain bacteria that are capable of fixing nitrogen from the air.
Eg alnus glutinosa
Lignotubers?
Woody swelling of root crown to protect against forest fires.
Eg eucalyptus
Autotroph?
An organism that makes its own food.
Limiting factors for photosynthesis?
Light, water, co2, photosynthetic pigments, temperature
Parts of a chloroplast?
Outer and inner membrane.
Stroma
Thylakoids
Stack of thylakoids- granum
Photosynthesis equation?
Co2 + water = glucose + oxygen
