What is the palisade mesophyll and spongy mesophyll?
Palisade - primary site of photosynthesis
Spongy - contains air and chloroplast
What is the stem for?
Movement of material.
Support leaves and flowers
Food storage
What are lenticels?’
Breathing pores
What are bud scale scars
Shows where terminal buds have been located, denotes a season’s growth.
Terminal bud and auxiliary lateral bud?
Terminal is bud on end of stem.
Auxiliary is on the side
What is cambium?
Thin green actively growing tissue between bark and wood, producing all new cells.
What is bark?
Old, inactive cambium.
Heartwood and sapwood?
Heart - old inactive xylem
Sap - new active xylem
What is a taproot?
One main root no nodes. Continuation of primary root, ideal for anchorage. Ie daffodil
Fibrous roots?
Many finely branched secondary roots with no main tap root. Shallow roots that cover a large area, more efficient absorption of water
Aerial roots?
Clinging air roots, shoots grow horizontally. Absorptive air roots that get moisture from air
Pmeumatophores?
Roots that grow out of water ie swamp cypress. They have breathing pores
