AMMONIA is introduced to the water cycle, then NITROSOMONAS BACTERIA convert AMMONIA into NITRITES, this is know as AMMONIFICATION. Then NITROBACTOR BACTERIA converts NITRITE into NITRATE in a process know as NITRIFICATION. Then ANAEROBIC BACTERIA converts NITRATES into NITROGEN GAS in a process called DENITRIFICATION and released small amounts of AMMONIA back into the water cycle as a byproduct.
