Nitrogen fixing bacteria converts the N2 into Ammonia (NH3), which is soluble in water.
Nitrifying bacteria convert Ammonia into Nitrates (NO3) or Nitrites (NO2), also soluble.
De-nitrifying bacteria convert nitrates into N2
