Energy Flow In Ecosystem Flashcards
Food chains
These show the simplest transfer of energy and matter through an ecosystem.
Diagram
Always begins with a plant/part of a plant
Matter and energy are transferred along a chain.
Plant ➡️ herbivore➡️ carnivores ➡️ carnivores
Producer ( Autotroph)
Organisms that produce their own food from non-living environment.
Consumer (Heterotroph)
Organisms that eat other organisms or their products
Food webs
Food webs show a more realistic and complex view of the relationships between the various organisms in the system.
Trophic levels
Energy is lost at every step
Trophic pyramid
Demonstrates the relative abundance (biomass) of different levels of consumers.
Food pyramids
They show the relative number and mass of various organisms in the food chain.
The total mass of the living things in a food web.
Biomass
A certain mass of organisms in one feeding level will support a smaller mass of organisms in the next level.
Decomposer
Special type of consumer that gets its energy by decomposing dead organisms (fungi and bacteria)
Detritovore
A type of consumer that feeds on decaying matter
