Ecological Succession Flashcards
1
Q
Ecological succession
A
Natural, gradual changes in the types of species that live in an area; can be primary or secondary.
The gradual replacement of one plant community by another through natural processes over time.
2
Q
Primary succession
A
Begins in a place without any soil.
Starts with the arrival of living things i.e. Lichens.
3
Q
Pioneer species
A
Do not need soil to survive.

Q
Primary succession cycle/diagram
A
- Arrival of living things.
- Soil starts to form (lichens, weather and erosion break down rocks).
- lichens die ➡️decompose = adding small amount of organic matter to the rock to make soil.
- Simple plants (mosses and fern) grow in new soil.
- Simple plants die➡️ adding more organic matter.
- Soil thickens and grasses, wildflowers and other plants take over.
- These plants die = more nutrients in soil.
- Shrubs and trees can survive
- Insects, birds and mammals have begun to move in.
5
Q
Secondary succession
A
Begins in a place that already has soil and was once the home of living organisms.
Occurs faster and has different pioneer species than primary succession.
E.g. After bush fires
