Nitrogen Flashcards
How common is the element nitrogen in living beings?
It’s the 3rd most common element meant in living beings
Name 2 reasons why organisms need nitrogen.
The form protein and dna
What are the 2 processes of the nitrogen cycle
Nitrogen fixation and denitrification
What are the 2 steps to nitrogen fixation
Nitrification (to form nitrates NO3) (small 3 w -) and Ammonification (to form ammonium NH4) (small 4 w +)
Explain how bacteria fixates nitrogen
Bacteria are free in the soil and will transform atmospheric nitrogen N2 into ammonium NH4 (small 4 w +) (nitrogen fixing bacteria) and nitrates NO3 (small 3 w -), (nitrifying bacteria).
Where are rhizobium found? In which type of plants?
In the root nodules of leguminous plants, like beans.
Explain how decomposers fixate nitrogen
Bacteria and mushrooms will decompose animal waste and dead organisms into ammonium (NH4) (small 4 w +)
Explain how lightning fixates nitrogen
Energy in the lightning strike will cause a reaction between atmospheric nitrogen
(N2) (small 2) and oxygen to form nitrates (NO3) (small 3 w -). These nitrates will catch in raindrops and fall into the soil.
What is denitrification
The transformation of nitrates into atmospheric nitrogen to keep the nitrogen cycle balanced.
What is denitrification
The transformation of nitrates into atmospheric nitrogen to keep the nitrogen cycle balanced.
