Biogeochemical Cycle Flashcards
What are 2 factors essential for life on Earth?
Energy and nutrients
What are the 2 phases the carbon cycle is divided into
Photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Which process fixates carbon from the atmosphere? Which puts carbon back into the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis- fixates carbon from the atmosphere
Cellular respiration- puts carbon back into the atmosphere
Which process fixates carbon from the atmosphere? Which puts carbon back into the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis- fixates carbon from the atmosphere
Cellular respiration- puts carbon back into the atmosphere
What is photosynthesis?
Process of when a plant captures carbon from the atmosphere (carbon dioxide) and combines it with water to create carbohydrates (sugars)
What is the chemical equation for photosynthesis?
6C02 (small 2) + 6H20 (small 2) + solar energy → C6H1206 ( small 6, 12, 6) + 602 (small 2)
Name 3 ways to put carbon back into the atmosphere
Cellular respiration, decomposers, and combustion
What is cellular respiration?
Process in which organisms combine oxygen with carbohydrates (sugars) to create energy
What is the chemical equation for cellular respiration?
602 (small 2) + C6H1206 (small 6,12,6)→ 6CO2 (small 2)+ 6H20 (small 2)+ energy
Name 2 examples of decomposers
Mushrooms, bacteria etc.
Name one example of combustion
Burning fuel, natural gases, coal, etc
What is the greenhouse effect
When fuels are burned, carbon is added to the atmosphere fast than plants can fixates it. Carbon will absorb heat from the sun which heats up the earth.
The carbon cycle
Producers- take in CO2 and gives out O2 (photosynthesis). Takes in 02 and gives out CO2 (cellular respiration)
Consumers- takes in O2 and gives out CO2 (photosynthesis). Takes in carbon from food (carbohydrates)
Decomposers- takes in O2 and gives out CO2 (photosynthesis) takes in carbon from dead waste)
