Night Operations Flashcards
how long will it take for your eyes to fully adapt to darkness
30 minutes
If you need light when setting up your drone and running through your pre-flight checklist, use what kind of light
Red light
what are scanning techniques
You’re scanning the sky in 30° increments, where the duration of each pause is based on the level of detail that is required, but no pause should last longer than 2 to 3 seconds. When moving from one viewing point to the next, pilots should overlap the previous field of view by 10°.
how will cigarette smoking affect night ops.
of all the self-imposed stressors that can affect your night flight operations, cigarette smoking most decreases visual sensitivity at night. Smoking 3 cigarettes in rapid succession or 20 to 30 cigarettes within a 24-hour period can cause you to lose approximately 20% of your night vision capability.
Night Lights on Manned Aircraft going away from you
where are the lights
On the left wing, you’ll see a red light.
On the right wing, you’ll see a green light.
On the rear of the aircraft, you’ll see a white light.
there are 2 types of cells in your eye what are they and what do they do?
Cones are responsible for color vision and they work better during the day when the light is bright.
Rods are unable to discern color but are very sensitive at low-light levels
what is Autokinesis
Autokinesis is a kind of phantom motion that is caused by staring at a single point of light against a dark background for more than a few seconds. After about 8-10 seconds, the light appears to move on its own.
what is flicker Vertigo
A light flickering at a rate between 4 and 20 cycles per second can produce unpleasant and dangerous reactions. Such conditions as nausea, vomiting, and vertigo may occur.
