Agriculture - 70% of population employed in agriculture, most are subsistence farmers. 19 million cattle, most in Africa
Example to Africa - If Nigeria gets it wrong then it could slow down the whole of Africa’s development

What are 3 positives impacts of TNCs in Nigeria

A
  1. They create jobs. Shell directly employs 65,000 Nigerians and supports 250,000 jobs in related industries
  2. They pay tax to the goverenment which can be used by the government to help their citizens. Shell paid £20 billion in corporation tax in 2013 in Nigeria
  3. The TNC can cause a muliplier effect. Oil refinares require a lot of local companies to support the running of it. 91% of shells contracts are with local NIgerian companies. This cuases the money earned from the oil to spread out across the country

  1. Human rights violations - Shell have beena ccused of crimes agains the Ogoni people in the Niger Delta
  2. The Jobs are not secure - The workers could lose their jobs suddely if the company decides to move to somewhere cheaper
  3. Child labour - Some TNCs have been known to use child labour in their factories
