Where is Jamaica found?
Jamaica is a small Caribbean island in
the middle of the Caribbean Sea.
Why does Jamaica’s past affect the country’s development?
Jamaica was ruled by Britain, part of the Slave Trade.
Jamaica wasn’t independent, so the economy didn’t grow.
What two problems did Jamaica face before tourism grew?

- Job opportunities for a quarter of the population
- Jamaica’s reputation around the world is growing
- Some areas are developing, including new transport infrastructure
What are the negative impacts of tourism in Jamaica?
The environment is being damaged - air pollution from transport, carbon emissions due to concrete production, mining by foreign companies for Bauxite
How is tourism improving in the future?
Ecotourism - smaller guesthouses & tourist experiences that don’t damage the environment
Tourism positive effect on the Economy
- 24% of Jamaica’s GDP is from Tourism
- $2 billion worth of spending so more taxes are collected this leads to the government having more money to spend to improve people’s lives by improving healthcare or education
Tourism negative effect on the Economy
- Cruise passengers spend $50 less per day than long-stay passengers
- Large tourist companies could benefit at the expense of local tourist business owners
Tourism positive effect on Employment
- Provides 200,000 jobs for people in Hotels, Transport and Tourist attractions.
- They learn new skills to have a better chance at a higher paying job
Tourism negative effect on employment
- The better-paid jobs will often be taken by foreign workers and they won’t spend their money in Jamacia meaning that the money will be lost out of Jamaica
- Many of the tourist jobs are low-skilled and low paid
Tourism positive effect on Infrastructure
- There is high investment on the coast as there is a lot of tourism there. Such as a new port and cruise line.
Tourism negative effect on Infrastructure
Most of the improved infrastructure is focussed in and between the main tourist areas. Therefore, isolated communities have not seen the improvements in their infrastructure
Tourism positive effect on Quality of Life
In northern such as Montego bay and Ocho Rios there is a lot more higher quality housing and a higher standard of living. This is due to tourism in that area
Tourism’s negative effect on Quality of Life
Non-tourist areas have issues such as poor housing, limited food supply and poor access to clean water, healthcare and education
Tourism positive effect on the Enviroment
It creates conservation and landscaping projects. This causes more tourism and job opportunites. New Water Treatment plant at Longwood
Tourism negative effect on the Enviroment
Mass tourism can cause problems for the enviroment such as footpath eroision, exessive waste and harmful emissions
