context:Nick is introduced - rebellious off the bat

‘then he winks’ - ‘winks’ dynamic verb sends off alarm bells for her, because he’s rebelling and risking a lot to do so

‘he hasn’t been issued a woman, not even one’ - ‘issued’ dynamic verb - army imagery - issued like guns

‘perhaps he’s an eye’ - ‘eye’ concrete noun - neologism - spying on her to catch her out

‘Too casual’ - adjective phrase - shows his power because he doesn’t care - mysterious element - links to him being an eye

context - Serena Joy asks Offred to go to Nick’s room and initiate a sexual relationship with him in order to get pregnant

‘Now it means:no heroics’ - not a matter of love like the old times - link to gilead’s confinement - irony that it would have meant something so unimportant in the grand scheme of things in previous times however now it means safety
‘Stroke’ intimacy - comfort and loving

And I thought afterwards: this is betrayal. Not the thing itself but my own response

‘He opens it himself,who else was i expecting’ - normality imagery
‘Not wanting to meet his eyes’ - ‘eye’ suspect he is an eye

context:Offred falls in love with nick and goes to see him regularly

‘I didn’t do it for him,but for myself entirely’ - shows she’s using him to begin with to satisfy her need o be touch and not feel so alone
However offred can be seen gradually falling for him throughout - she’s thankful for him allowing them to sleep together - pattern of evaluative adjective shows she’s engrossed in their relationship and she’s taking it all in
I make of him an idol, a cardboard cutout’ shes worshipping nick - he represents freedoms and reminds her luke - not allowed to have feeling and he makes her feel - it’s her outlet from the regime - she has desperation to see him

I expect a stranger, but it’s Nick who pushes open the door, flicks on the light - light links to escapism from gilead - she uses nick sleeping with him in the dark as a way to ignore reality which makes her not want to escape gilead as much

nick the private eye - eye gestapo double agents
