context around the quote - Janine has had a baby however it turns out the baby was unhealthy and died, she then goes to a different household - mistreat of handmaids

‘She lost that pregnant glow. Her face is white and peaked, as if the juice is being sucked out of her’ - metaphor for her losing her purpose - ‘juice’ - life

‘not an illness, an emptiness’ - gilead being made to think that was her only purpose after giving birth and it not healthy she is broken - no approbation -her pregnancy was

A

context - how Janine plays an active part in the particution of the man accused of raping a handmaid

‘walking as if she’s feeling her way with her feet, in the dark: Janine.’ simile ‘dark’ abstract noun

Shes let go, totally now’ - metaphor after losing her baby and not fulfilling what gilead has told her is a whole and natural purpose she’s lost a hold on herself

‘She gives a small giggle’ - gilead want them to be children as children are easier to manipulate - juxtapose the violence of the particution shows her cant think straight
