NGO responses to LD Flashcards
BI (key points)
The world issue I have studied is limited development
Most countries have bilateral aid but vast majority of international aid organisations are known as NGOs.
UN development programme stated “we have made great progress against several leading causes of death and disease. Life expectancy has increased dramatically; infant mortality death rates have declined, and we have turned the tide on HIV and Malaria deaths have halved but the world is off track to achieve the health-related SDGs”
LOF
Improving healthcare, education, food security
LOA
Whilst many interventions have been successful in the short-term, ultimately they have failed to fully tackle this issue
P1
International organisations have attempted to improve health care in countries affected by limited development
P1 explain (key points)
Invested funding into multiple different avenues: building hospitals, programmes like vaccination programmes, increased education
Reduce transmission rates and allow people to access care they need so they don’t die
P1 example
Doctors without borders provided 54,000 people with HIV/AIDSs drug treatment in 2022
P1 analysis
NGOs have been effective as able to provide treatment to countries who may not have had access without them.
P2
However, it can certainly be argued that international organisations have failed to successfully tackle health issues in countries affected by limited development
P2 explain (key points)
Many countries still affected by lack of healthcare and high prevalence of preventable disease
Prime working age = most affected so more likely to live in poverty, no reliable income
Country can’t have progressive taxation system so still affected by LD
P2 example
WHO estimates that a child under 5 dies every 2 minutes due to malaria
P2 analysis
International orgs = unsuccessful as extremely high death rates due to disease
P1 + P2 link
International organisations have had some success such as providing medicine but still have a long way to go as many people are still dying prematurely
P3
International organisations have attempted to improve access to education in countries affected by limited development
P3 explain (key points)
International organisations have invested loads of money to improve education.
build good quality buildings, train teachers and provide them with resources
Help get those from the most deprived backgrounds into school, helping them achieve the skills for the future
P3 examples
98% of teachers involved in Mary’s Meals said that children now pay more attention in class since the introduction
Noticed a notable reduction in levels of children who are dropping out of school
P3 analysis
Some success as they’ve improved attainment rates which wouldn’t have happened without these organisations
P4
However, it can certainly be argued that international organisations have failed to successfully tackle lack of quality education in countries affected by LD
P4 explain (key points)
Many LD countries still impacted by lack of quality education
Classrooms are often overcrowded, teachers aren’t trained to teach at proficient levels and aren’t provided with resources
Low attainment rates
Children aren’t equipped with skills for the future
P4 example
the average school career in Africa is just 5 years compared to the U.K’s 13.
P4 analysis
International organisations still have a long way to go as attainment rates are still extremely low and the level of schooling is poor compared to developed countries
P3 + P4 link
International organisations have had some successful in tackling lack of quality education, like improving attainment rates in some areas but still a long way to go.
Children can’t have fulfilling futures so traps them and their country in cycle of limited development
P5
A third way that international organisations have tried to tackle LD is through tackling food insecurity
P5 explain (key points)
Many international organisations have invested money into food schemes to ensure as many people as possible have access to safe and nutritious food to fight of ill-effects of not having food especially in emergency situations such as civil war
P5 examples
In 2023, Mary’s Meals provided 151,000 meals to children in Liberia and 206,000 to children in Haiti.
P5 analysis (key points)
Clearly proves International organisations have had some success as they feed people who may not have had food without them.
Longer and healthier lives
P6
Despite this, food insecurity is still a significant issue in countries affected by limited development
P6 explain (key points)
Countries still impacted by lack of food so millions die from effects of such
People may be out of work due to ill-health so county has mass unemployment so country can’t progressive taxation systems so still trapped in cycle of LD
P6 example
8.9% of the world’s population faced food insecurity in 2022
P6 analysis
International organisations haven’t been fully successful as countries still trapped in cycle of LD and millions are dying from preventable deaths
P5 + P6 link
Have had some success in tackling food insecurity such as providing meals, still a long way to go because people are dying and large percent of globe affected.
