Impact of LD on individuals Flashcards
BI
The world issue I have studied is limited development
Development is the way we study how progressed one country is compared to another
Social, economic, political
LOF
Lack of quality education, high prevalence of preventable diseases, gender inequality, poverty, conflict, corrupt and incompetent governments
LOA
All of these factors exist on an intersectionality but one factor is the most prevalent
P1
One way that global development impacts individuals and families is lack of quality education
P1 explain (key points)
Nations affected by LD often don’t have the funds and gov support required to invest into the education system.
Nations don’t have trained teachers, resources and physical infrastructure required to deliver quality education
Individuals may not have basic literacy and numeracy skills needed to achieve a high paying job. Trapping them in the cycle of poverty
P1 examples
According to the UN, the average school career of a child in Africa is just 5 years compared to the U.K’s 13.
263 million children are missing from schools in developing countries
P1 analysis
Lack of government support + funding within nations affected by LD can mean that individuals suffer from lack of quality education so can’t escape poverty, live a long and healthy life and make personal advancements as they don’t have the necessary skills
P2
However, some people argue that high prevalence of preventable disease is a more pressing factor than lack of quality education
P2 explain (key points)
People affected usually within working age so has a knock-on effect on their families as they can’t work to support them, trapping them in the cycle of poverty.
Death often leaves children behind who may be cared for by other family members who can’t work, furthering the cycle of poverty.
P2 examples
Around 250,000 children a year die from Malaria.
WHO estimates that a child under five dies every two minutes due to malaria
P2 analysis
Majorly increases their chances of living in poverty
P1 + P2 link
Both factors = significant
Lack of quality education = more significant as citizens are unable to access basic services as people are underqualified to work in these jobs which can then lead to other factors
P3
Another way that limited developmental issues impact individuals and families is that they are more likely to be victims of conflict
P3 explain (key points)
More likely to experience conflict than those not from countries experiencing LD
May have to compete for resources
May experience fear, violence and corruption which can mean that they’re more likely to flee their homes for safety
Families are torn apart
P3 example
In South Sudan, almost 4 million citizens have been displaced as they seek safety and security due to the civil war
P3 analysis
Due to developmental factors, citizens are more likely to experience conflict
Can cause displacement and death
P4
However, some people believe that corrupt governments are a more pressing concern compared to conflict
P4 explain (key points)
Those in power abuse their positions to benefit their own needs
Money that should be spent on tackling LD is mismanaged so country can’t develop
Individuals less likely to access essential services, live in poverty
P4 example
Even though Nigeria is one of the richest countries in Africa, WFP estimates that 60% of its citizens live in poverty due to their corrupt government
P4 analysis
Citizens more likely to experience LD
Results in high rates of poverty and lessens access to essential services so higher mortality rates compared to developed countries
P3 + P4 link
Corrupt governments = more as they are often the contributing factor in causing conflict within the country.
This leads to poor education, poverty and death
P5
A third factor is gender inequality
P5 explain (key points)
Some of greatest levels of gender inequality are within countries that are faced with LD
Women = primary carers
Tradition forbids women from working so they have to rely on men which can leave them vulnerable especially to poverty, domestic abuse and HIV
Tradition forbids women from gaining an education, further relying on men
P5 example
The World Bank estimates that by not educating girls, it costs the developing world $15-$30 trillion.
P5 analysis
Traditional gender roles, women often pressured so can’t maintain a healthy lifestyle, often trapped in poverty and can’t make personal advancements
P6
However, some people argue that poverty is a more pressing factor in significantly and negatively impacting individuals compared to gender inequality
P6 explain (key points)
If in poverty, they’ll undertake extreme measures to survive such as taking part in criminal activities
Struggle to obtain essential services so live in poor health and die younger
P6 example
The World Bank sets the poverty at $1.90 a day yet according to The World Economic Forum, the people of DRC earn an average of just $1.08 a day, making it the poorest nation in the world.
P6 analysis
Increased crime rates
Earlier deaths and live in poor health for longer
Can’t make personal advancements
P5 + P6 link
Poverty = more significant as it acts as a catalyst for negatively impacting people
