Newtons Laws Flashcards
What’s does Newton’s first law state?
States that ever object will remain at rest or in a uniform state of motion until an outside force changes its state. (Law of inertia)
What does Newton’s second law explain?
A body’s rate of change in momentum is proportional to the size of the force applied and acts in the same direction as the force applied (the more you put in, the more comes out)
What does Newton’s third law state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Use the example of a sprinter in the start block to explain how the sprinter sets off
The sprinter exerts a downwards and backwards force onto the blocks. The blocks then exert an equal and opposite force against the sprinters, allowing them to move
Explain how Newton’s first law of inertia applies to the ball in a penalty kick
The ball will remain at rest until the force from the footballers foot kicks the ball, causing it to move and change its state
Apply Newton’s second law of acceleration to a tennis ball about to be hit by a player
The harder the player swings the racket, the harder they will hit the ball, giving the ball more momentum and accelerates quickly
Apply Newton’s third law of reaction to a boxers fist when it hits an opponents face
The glove hits the opponents face. The face is exerting an opposite force to the glove. When they connect the face will stop the glove
