Gas Exhange Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 different ways carbon dioxide is transported in the body?
A
- Dissolved in water
- Carried with haemoglobin to form carbaminohaemoglobin
- dissolved in blood plasma
2
Q
What is the inspiration process at rest?
A
- Diaphragm moves down
- external intercostal contract and move the ribs outwards
- this increases the volume of the thoracic cavity
3
Q
What is the inspiration process during exercise?
A
- abdominal contract to pull the diaphragm down
- external intercostals contract
- pectorals contract to pull the ribs outwards
- sternocloidomastioid contracts to pull the ribs upwards
4
Q
How thick are the walls of the alveoli? And why?
A
They are only 1 cell thick to allow for quick gaseous exchange
5
Q
How many oxygen molecules can each haemoglobin molecule attach to?
A
Up to 4, but usually less when at rest as less oxygen is needed around the body
6
Q
Oxygen and haemoglobin together is called…
A
Oxyhemoglobin
7
Q
Carbon dioxide and haemoglobin together is called…
A
Carbominohaemoglobin
