Newtons Laws Flashcards
what is newtons first law
The Law of Inertia
A body will continue in its state of rest or constant velocity in a straight line unless it is acted upon by an external force
what is newtons second law
The Law of Acceleration
The acceleration of an object will increase if the amount of force that is applied is increased
If the mass of an object is increased, the acceleration caused by the same force will decrease
what is newtons third law
The Law of Action & Reaction
For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
what is momentum and how do you calculate it
Momentum is the measure of the amount of motion possessed by an object in motion
momentum = mass x velocity
what is impulse, how do you calculate it, and how does it affect momentum
the application of force over a given time
force (in newtons) X time (in seconds)
the impulse-momentum relations ship is that changes in an objects are equal to the impulse applied to it
what are the four types of motion and what do they do
linear - movement that happens along a straight line
curvilinear - movement that happens along a curved line
angular - movement that happens along a circular line around an axis (central point) at the same angle, in the same direction, at the same time
general - General motion is any movement that combines linear motion and angular motion
what is distance and displacement
Distance describes the length of space between two points
Displacement describes the distance travelled between a starting point and an endpoint
