Muscles Flashcards
what are the three muscle types and are they voluntary or not
cardiac involuntary, smooth involuntary, skeletal voluntary
what is the origin and insertion point of tendons
origin is on the most stationary bone and the insertion is on the most movable bone
what is contraction and relaxation
contraction is where the tension in the muscle fibres increase making them shorter and tighter, and relaxation is where tension in the muscle fibres decreases, making them longer and looser
what are the three types of skeletal muscles and what do they do
agonists they provide the main force that causes a particular movement, antagonists they oppose the main force that causes a particular movement, stabilisers they support the movement by prompting the movement or reducing unnecessary movement
what is isotonic
the muscle fibres produce tension as they move (lengthen or shorten) across the joint
what is isometric
The muscle fibres produce tension but do not move around the joint
describe the three stages of a bicep curl
isotonic contraction
- muscle contracts - concentric isotonic contraction
- muscle elongates - eccentric isotonic contraction
isometric contraction
- isometric contraction
