Q

Definition of Newton’s second law

A

When a resultant force is applied to an object of mass, it accelerates in the direction of the resultant force. This acceleration is directly proportional to the resultant force and inversely proportional to the mass.

Definition of Newton’s law of gravitation

A

Every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force that is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of distance between their centres

Q

Explain Newton’s first law

A

If an object is at rest, it will remain at rest and if an object is moving, it will not speed up or slow down unless acted upon by a resultant force

Q

What scalar affects the inertia of an object?

A

Inertia is directly proportional to mass. The greater the mass, the greater the inertia, therefore making it less likely to change its motion

Q

Why is it important to wear a seat belt?

A

When you’re in a bus or car, you’re moving at the same speed as the car. If the driver suddenly applies brakes, your body jerks forward as a result of inertia. Your seatbelt applies a backward force to counteract the inertia.

Q

What is the relationship between acceleration and force?

A

It is directly proportional (as the resultant force increases, the acceleration increases)

Q

What is the relationship between acceleration and mass?

A

The acceleration is inversely proportional to the mass. As the mass increases, the acceleration decreases.
