Electric Circuits Flashcards
Definition of emf
The work done per unit charge by the source (battery). It is equal to the potential difference measured across the terminals of a battery when no charges are flowing in the circuit.
Definition of potential difference
Potential difference across the ends of a conductor is the energy transferred per unit electric charge flowing through it.
(Measured across a resistor or bulb when the switch is closed)
Definition of terminal potential difference
The voltage measured across the terminals of a battery when charges are flowing in the circuit
(When the switch in the circuit is closed)
Definition of current strength
The rate of flow of charge
Definition of one coulomb
The charge transferred in a conductor in one second if the current is one ampere
Definition of Ohm’s law
The potential difference across a conductor is directly proportional to the current in the conductor at constant temperature
Definition of power
Rate at which work is done or energy is transferred
