Newton's Laws Flashcards
What is mass?
A measure of the amount of matter something is made up of. It is a scalar measurement.
What is mass measured in?
Kilograms
What is weight?
The force experienced by all mass because of gravity.
What is the gravitational field strength for Earth?
10N/Kg
How many grams in a newton?
100g
What is Newton’s first law?
A body will continue in a state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line unless acted upon by a resultant force.
What does every object have?
Inertia
Is inertia a force?
No
What must Newton’s first law have?
No resultant force
What is Newton’s second law?
The acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force acting on it.
What is the formula for Newton’s second law?
Resultant Force = Mass x Acceleration
F = M x A
What is Newton’s third law?
For every action force there is an equal and opposite reaction force. Action and reaction forces act on different bodies.
What does the resultant force cause?
The change in motion of the object.
Why does air resistance happen?
Due to the force the moving object has to exert to push the air out of the way.
What does the size of the air resistance depend on?
The speed of the object, its area of cross section and its shape.
