Further Motion Concepts Flashcards
What is momentum?
The name given to the products of the mass and velocity of an object.
What do objects with a large momentum require to alter their motion?
A large force
What objects have momentum?
All moving objects
What happens when an object accelerates?
It changes its velocity from one value to another. This means that, when it accelerates it also changes its momentum.
What is the resultant force acting on an accelerating object equal to?
The rate of change of momentum of the object.
What happens during a collision in an isolate/closed system?
The total momentum of the objects remains constant (Momentum is conserved)
Momentum before = ?
Momentum After
What happens in an elastic collision?
Kinetic energy is conserved so kinetic energy before equals kinetic energy after. Momentum is conserved
What happens in an inelastic collision?
Kinetic energy is not conserved as energy is converted to other forms. Momentum is conserved.
What happens in an explosive collision?
Kinetic energy is not conserved but momentum is conserved.
What do you write out in equations of motion?
U
V
A
T
X
What is a turning force?
When a force acts at a distance away from the centre of a pivot, the force exerts a turning effect on the pivot called a turning force.
What is a moment?
The turning force that acts on the pivot.
Sum of clockwise moments = ?
Sum of anticlockwise moment
