Distance, Speed and acceleration Flashcards
What is meant by the definition “Velocity”?
An instantaneous speed in a particular direction.
What is meant by the definition “Reaction Time”?
The time taken to react to a stimulus.
What is meant by the definition “Thinking distance”?
The distance travelled whilst reacting.
What is meant by the definition “Braking distance”?
The distance travelled whilst braking and going to a stop.
Why is speed a scalar quantity?
It only has magnitude (size).
Why is velocity a vector quantity?
It has a direction as well as a magnitude.
How do you find speed?
Speed = Distance
————–
Time
How do you find acceleration/deceleration?
Acceleration/Deceleration = Change in velocity/Time
What is speed measured in?
m/s
What is velocity measured in?
m/s²
What is the meaning of a constantly increasing gradient in a distance - time graph?
A constant speed and velocity
What is the meaning of zero gradient in a distance - time graph?
Zero speed so its stationary
What is the meaning of an increasing gradient in a distance - time graph?
An increasing speed so it is accelerating
What is the meaning of a decreasing gradient in a distance - time graph?
A decreasing speed so its decelerating
What is the meaning of a constantly increasing gradient in a velocity- time graph?
Accelerating constantly
What is the meaning of zero gradient in a velocity- time graph?
Zero acceleration so a constant speed
What is the meaning of an increasing gradient in a velocity- time graph?
An increasing acceleration
What is the meaning of a decreasing gradient in a velocity- time graph?
A decreasing acceleration
What is the total stopping distance?
Thinking distance + Braking distance
How do you work out the distance travelled in a velocity time graph?
Calculate the area under the graph
What factors affect the thinking distance?
Tiredness, alcohol, poor concentration, drugs
What factors affect the braking distance?
Velocity of car, the weather, condition of tires
What must cars have to stop safely?
Adequate tread depth to clear water from under the tire.
