Newton's First Law Flashcards
What is a Force?
A force is any push or pull
What do Forces do to an object?
Forces may change the motion of an object. They may combine with other forces to affect motion
Contrast Contact and Field Forces
Contact forces: act between objects that are in contact with each other and the forces only act when the objects are in contact
(Ex. Friction, ordinary pushes and pulls)
Field Forces: act without contact
(Ex. Gravity, electromagnetism)
What is Inertia?
The tendency of an object to resist a change in its motion
What is mass?
Mass is the measure of the quantity of matter in an object, and of the Inertia of an object
Which is important to the relationship between force and acceleration, Matter or Inertia? Why?
The measure of Inertia; mass resists acceleration
What is Equilibrium?
A state where the net force equals zero
Describe if and how objects move with no net force applied to them?
When there is no net force, an object’s motion does not change. An object at rest remains at rest, and an object at motion will remain in motion at a constant velocity
