Momentum Flashcards

1
Q

What is momentum?

A

Mass in motion, Inertia in motion, but best described as a measure of how hard it is to stop a moving object (momentum = mass x velocity)

What is Impulse?

A

Impulse is Force applied for some amount of time

Impulse = net force x time

Q

Two carts move toward each other and collide. Describe this event in terms of Forces, Impulse, and Momentum

A

The objects exert equal and opposite forces on each other for exactly the same time, which means both carts will experience equal and opposite Impulse and an equal and opposite change in Momentum

Q

What is a “Closed” system?

A

A system with no external forces acting on it that may change the momentum of the system, and there are no changes in mads within the system

Q

How do airbags save lives?

A

By reducing the force acting to change the momentum of your body by increasing the amount of time over which your momentum is changed

Q

What is a Perfectly Inelastic Collision?

A

Objects collide and stick together, Momentum is conserved but much of the Kinetic Energy is Lost

Q

What is a Perfectly Elastic Collision?

A

Objects collide and bounce off each other, but do not deform permanently. Both Momentum and Kinetic Energy is conserved

Q

A pipe bomb is initially at rest, then explodes, sending pieces in all directions. Describe this event in terms of conservation of momentum

A

Each piece is a little momentum vector. When we sum up all those momenta, we still get the total momentum of 0
