*pressure on housing and services- As
large amounts of migrants move to
newcastle, more housing is needed. This

space around the city e.g. Great Park
*Some immigrants are highly skilled-
there are 10,000 international students
and Newcastle university, they often stay
in Newcastle and get a highly paid job
*Opportunities for new businesses-
migrants in the West End has led to an
increase in world food shops along the West Road
What cultural opportunities are there in Newcastle and what benefits do they bring?
•China town is home to a large number of Chinese restaurants and food shops. Every hear a Chinese New year party is held on the street.
•The Newcastle Mela is a free Event based around South Asian Cultures. It is an opportunity to dance, sing and learn more about South Asian culture. It attracts 30,000 people a year
this allows the government to make money off tourist spending which can be reinvested to improve services.
What recreation and entertainment opportunities do Newcastle have and what benefits do they bring?
•Metro centre opened during 1986 attracting 24 million people every year, Eldon square was also opened in 1977 and was the biggest British shopping mall at the time.
•The Quayside is an area with a thriving nightlife and an international reputation for culture. The sage music hall and Millennium bridge are also located there and attract many tourists every uear.
•St James’ Park is the stadium home to the Champion ship club of Newcastle united and was used as a football venue for the 2012 olympics and 2015 rugby world cup. It had also hosted charity events and rock concerts.
what employment changes has Newcastle experienced?
*Deindustrialisation meant the Uk started shutting down manufacturing companies so products could be shopped in instead for cheaper allowing companies to make higher profit margins as money was being saved
*Many people lost jobs in mining, management and agriculture and there were more job opportunities in the territory sector within sales and customer services e.g. in Greggs and British Airways
What benefits does Newcastle’s integrated transport system have?
•The Tyne and Wear Metro serves the wider Tyne and Wear and links Eastern. coastal areas like Tyne mouth and Whitley bay. Metros are subsidised to keep prices low and runs on electricity so does not pollute the city. This means people have accessibility to further markets and job opportunities and provides a sustainable way for people to travel around
•Neuron scooters are a network of scooters for hire for short periods of time for a small cost. They are more sustainable, don’t contribute to climate change and encourage people to exercise
what opportunities does urban greening bring to Newcastle?
•The town moor is a green area of common land in Newcastle. Freemen have the right to graze cattle there and it is also famous for being the location if The Hopping’s (Europe’s largest travelling fun fair)
•Jesmond dene is a public park in the east end of Newcastle. Attractions within Jesmond Dene include a coffee shop and a conference centre.
These bring more leisure facilities attracting visitors and more trees and green space so more carbon dioxide is absorbed.
