What is integrity?

A

the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles
-the higher standards which society expects from professional persons
-Integrity connotes adherence to the ethical standards of one’s own profession, and professional integrity is linked to the manner in which that particular professions professes to serve the public

A

You must make sure that your conduct justifies your patients’ trust in you and the public’s trust in the profession.

You must always be honest about your experience, qualifications and current role.
You must act with honesty and integrity when designing, organising or carrying out research, and follow national research governance guidelines and our guidance

Why is dishonest outside a persons medical profession still bad?

A

dishonesty related to matters outside the doctor’s clinical responsibility (eg providing false statements or fraudulent claims for monies) is particularly serious. This is because it can undermine the trust the public place in the medical profession.

A

-people will receive safe and effective care
- patients disclose personal confidential information to advise in the best intrect (accuracy is need), patient trust will remain if a doctor acted with integrity

How do doctors act with integrity?

A

There are often tremendous and daily pressures on doctors and other members of the profession, to compromise on these principles. Integrity is a measure of how they stand up to these pressures, to continue to put the interests of the patient first by helping and not harming them.

Where must a doctor be honest and integral?

A

-Preparing medical reports
-Record-keeping – medical records should be contemporaneous and not retrospectively altered in the event of a complaint or claim, they must be comprehensive and include all relevant information
-Giving evidence or acting as a witness – as well as being truthful when giving a spoken or written statement, you must be honest about the limitations of your knowledge and competence
-Co-operating fully with any complaint or investigation related to your treatment of patients,
