First 28 days of life
What components are included in the neonatal hx?
Maternal & Paternal Hx (medical and genetic),
Maternal OB Hx,
Current OB Hx (antepartum, intrapartum, gestational age of newborn)
What physical exam components are done immediately after birth?
Observation -Cyanosis -Resp distress -Genetic anomalies -Rashes -Overall skin color Lung/Heart Auscultation APGAR Score Skeletal -Congenital anomalies Birth Trauma (clavicle fx) Number of Umbilical Vessels -2 arteries, 1 vein Placenta -Infarcts or clots
When is APGAR score assessed and what are the scores?
Assessed at 1 & 5 minutes
7 or more = normal
4-5 = fairly low
3 or less = critically low
What does APGAR stand for?
Activity Pulse Grimace Appearance Respiration
What is the normal HC in a newborn?
33-38cm
What is the avg HR during PE in the nursery?
100-180bpm
What is the avg resp rate during PE in the nursery?
40-60 breaths/min
What is the normal BP in a newborn at 12hrs and at 96hrs
12hrs = 50-70/25-45 96hrs = 60-90/20-60
Which fontanelle closes first?
The posterior fontanelle (1cm) closes first at 1-3 months.
The anterior fontanelle (1-4cm) closes at 6-12 months.
